Sena SMH10 Trade in / Upgrade

Date:
By Wom Battle

I've been riding my Harley-Davidson® around using the original Sena SMH10 Bluetooth Headset Intercom now for 18 months or so and love them.  I have noticed though that since upgrading to an iPhone 4s phone calls seem to drop out a little more often but I've been putting it down to telco mobile coverage,  mmmmm.

Then I received an email the other day from Mr Mobile letting me know that there's a new version of the SMH10 now and they had a Trade-in/Upgrade program that would see me get new ones for $129.00 each if I could find the original invoice and send my current ones back to them.  So why would did I bother?

The old model has a power jack that you can use to recharge it and a 3.5mm audio connection to let you plug your iPod into.  Other than that it's a closed box, what's in there stays in there in terms of firmware.  It's not upgradeable and the power charging cable is an odd size so don't lose it.

The new model SMH10B has a micro USB connector which is quite commonly used for cameras and lots of other things you'll plug into your computer.  So straight up it's one cord less you have to carry around on the bike to charge it (or one less you have to buy if you lose it).  The other advantage with a USB interface is that that now you will be able to update the firmware via USB which, if it's realised, will be great to help these things last longer as technology changes (or bugs are found).  Apparently the new model has improved connectivity with iPhone 4s which may also solve the problem I've noted above.

As a bit of a geek all that appeals to me and given that the two units I have have seen plenty of work in plenty of weather the opportunity to upgrade to shiny new ones with new features at 35% or so less than the price of two new ones ($258 instead of $399) the math was good enough for me.

Officially the new features of the SMH10B are;

  • Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR
  • Firmware upgradeable
  • Pairing with selective profile A2DP stereo or Handsfree.

I ordered the upgrade kit from Mr Mobile last Friday, I posted my units and the paperwork to them on Monday afternoon and I received the replacement units on Wednesday afternoon.  As usual great service.

The box contains

  • The new SMH10B unit
  • A Micro USB cord
  • A 12 volt (cigarette lighter) power adapter with micro USB so you can recharge it on the run if you need to.

Do they work?  Dunno, haven't used them yet, I can say though it connected to my Tom Tom Rider first go without any issues.  I'll get back to you with more as soon as the weather allows me to get back on my Harley-Davidson.
