Playing Catch-up

Date:
By Wom Battle

The general plan for the day was for me to head north with my son and the HOG Chapter for a ride, turn around and meet my wife and other kids at Tea Gardens for lunch on the way back.  My wife had planned to leave an hour or so after me and the quick but late departure put a spanner into the works about what the new plans were.

I headed north at the upper end of the speed limit (completely legal of course) hoping to, but not desperate to, meet up with the HOGs along the way and say G'day.  Heading towards Raymond Terrace I saw a group of 7-8 largish bikes in the distance and thought that I might have caught up with the HOG's very quickly.  As I got closer to them I noticed that they were all over the two lanes heading north like browns cows. I saw cars enter and exit their group and what were initially a group of bikes, obviously travelling together , soon became a mess of cars and bikes trying to sort themselves out.  At that point I understood the need for the discipline and rules that riding with the HOG Chapter require.  I rode past the Goldwings, the BMW K LT and one Harley as quick as I could.

Riding north up to the Tea Gardens turnoff saw us making good time, but then we hit the boring 80kph roadworks leading pretty much all the way to Buledelah and rode the last 20k's trapped behind a line of traffic looking at the back of a caravan.  I assumed that they HOG's would likely stop at Buledelah and after a quick look around I found them at the Caltex.  I pulled in and had a nice chat with a couple of familiar faces and called my wife to see what she was up to.

She hadn't left, which left me in a bit of a quandary about what I should do next.  She was an hour away from Tea Gardens, I was 20 minutes.  While I was trying to decide the best course of action the HOG's decided for me (in a way).  Their stop was over and they were getting ready to head out.  I would have enjoyed heading further north, but,  given the rushed nature of the second departure of the day, I needed fuel and thought it might be incredibly rude to expect them to wait.  I also didn't feel like playing catchup again, so we saw them off, refuelled (12.44 l @ $16.90) and headed south back to Tea Gardens. Not exactly sure what my wife was going to do and on the bike there's not much of a chance of finding out. Lucky I'm a believer that things will just work out if you let them.

Back through the boring roadworks, a quick left and we found ourselves in Tea Gardens sitting at Nicole's Cafe and Gallery.  A quick check of my voice mail and a call told me that my wife was on the way and only about 20 minutes off, so my son and I settled in for a chat and a drink.  The girls arrived, we had lunch and chilled out for an hour or so then headed back homeward.  The trip home following my wife today, was uneventful but enjoyable.  There were quite a few bikes about and I became determined today, after reading some rubbish in the Newcastle Herald that suggested that BMW riders can't nod at Harleys, that I'd not at anything on two wheels.  Maybe the rubbish nod rules are true, but I don't give a tinkers cuss, whatever bike you are on you are riding for the same reasons!

Anyhow, back to the office, dropped the bike off and put it to bed then back into the car and home to blog.  Good fun!

Total K's for the day: 231.
