Off to the State HOG Rally

The NSW State HOG Rally started today in Bathurst so @officerhardass (formerly known as JP and Heffy) with his wife Krittie, Zanderhar and I planned to leave the home town about 10am and ride our two Harley-Davidson® Road King® motorcycles there down the famous Putty Road.

Like last time we went through Cessnock, Broke and along the very pretty Milbrodale Road to meet the Putty just south of Bulga. An easy but very fun trip down through the bends except for a very close call around a left hander when a complete fwit towing a caravan clearly had no idea that you should try to stay on the correct side of the road.  Thankfully @officerhardass's riding talent saw him lean more into the corner and evade the big white tin box rather than panic, hit the brakes and stand up into it.  You've seriously got to wonder what goes on in the heads of these geriatric fools, Adventure in Dementia I reckon.

Anyhow, that said, we continued past the old Halfway House, waved at the artist there and glanced at the big stainless Wo Man artwork and made our way to the Grey Gum Cafe where we were assured of a good burger and coffee.  I knew that there were a group of fellow HOG members travelling this way from the mid north coast, fortunately the 20 or so of them arrived after us so we got our food nice and fast.  After plenty of g'days and friendly banter it was time for us to leave them there, our plan was to see if we could do Bells Line of Road and head over to Oberon and into Bathurst the back way.

Sadly a combination of traffic between Windsor and Richmond and a rather large roadwork delay on the Bells ate into our time significantly.  During the stop there we decided to abandon Oberon and head to Macas at Lithgow for a coffee (it was starting to cool right down) and from there straight to Bathurst on the highway.  One advantage of the roadword stop was that we managed to find ourselves in front of all the cars lined up so we had an unobstructed run over the mountains from there to Lithgow, a very sweet ride.

We arrived at Bathurst about 5pm, registered at the Rally and headed for our digs, the Rydges right on Conrod Straight.  The hotel is very nice indeed!  We certainly felt for the more hardy HOG's who decided to camp onsite, they were predicting 2 - 4 degrees overnight, not my style at all.

After unpacking it was time to hit the bar, say g'day to friends old and new followed up by some wood fired pizza and gins at the Rally.  Zander and I ended the day back in the restaurant at the hotel for some seafood ravioli for both of us, and a big steak for him, duck curry for me.  A good start for the Rally indeed.
