Very Minor Surgery

Date:
By Wom Battle

The new rattle in the Harley had been causing me some concern so we were heading to Melbourne to get it checked out.  We were only about 160k's away and were looking at trying to get there by 10am so we could make it back for the afternoon's festivities at the Rally.

The route took us towards Bendigo and then a lefty towards the city.  The morning was dry, weather very pleasant and it was some of the nicest riding of the trip to that point.  The views of the cityscape were great and we crossed the Westgate Bridge and I saw parts of the outer city I'd not seen before.  The GPS took us straight to the dealership in Brunswick who were expecting us courtesy of a call made my my wife who rang a couple of times while we were on our way.

The mechanic walked out to greet us and had the rattle solved in about 30 seconds.  It was a chrome cover that sits on the bottom of the cylinders on the near side.  It seems that when it was put back on after the engine upgrade it wasn't locktighted and had worked loose.  It was probably the only thing we didn't check, because it was always hot! So with that sorted we decided to grab some breakfast before we rode back to the rally.

The area the dealership was in had a definite ethnic feel and there didn't seem to be too much that we were keen to try so we ended up next door eating lebanese pizzas for breakfast and drinking quite strong coffee. My son ordered, he picked one that looked most like breakfast (egg and meat) and two others at random based on the unusuallness of the names, despite having no idea what they were.  All were good!

Back on the road and with a few wrong turns taken by me we ended up heading generally towards Bendigo with our perception that the route was actually quicker than the way we came in and certainly without toll roads.  I wonder if State Govt's give GPS manufacturers kickbacks for pushing people uneccessarily onto toll roads???

As we rode closer to Bendigo the weather became remarkably horrible.  We fortunately stopped under an overhead bridge and put our wet weather jackets on before the worst of it (already had the pants on) and the rest of the trip back to Talbot was in quite heavy rain.  We'd been wet plenty of times since we left home, it wasn't an issue.  The decision was to change into some new clothes and rain, hail or shine head to Maryborough to check out the goings on at the Rally.
