On the start of our recent crossing of the Nullarbor we met up with the "lone rider" at Nundroo SA. During a chat and a couple of beers with him he brought out a book he said he'd been following for two months or so. That book was the Australia Motorcycle Atlas by Peter "The Bear" Thoeming published by Hema Maps.
It provides details of 200 great motorcycle rides in Australia with lots of details about the top 100 of them. Some cover tarred rides, some dirt, only the tarred ones interest me though! I was really interested in the book at the time the loan rider showed it to us and I was very pleased when the big red guy delivered it to me yesterday. Merry Christmas to Wombattle! I've been through most of it already, and I'm happy to report that even thought I've seen a good chunk of the NSW ones I've now got some more weekends away in mind to cover the ones I haven't seen. The rides covered are from, say, 50's up consisting of some interesting loops and detours that are well worth considering when touring around if you have the time to spend between destinations. There's marked maps in the book for for all of them. |
One of the great things about the book is that it points out distances, stops, hazards (including over policed routes) and towns that appear on the map that you might think you could stop/fuel at but don't really exist. It's spiral bound and comes in a plastic cover, so you open it up and use it in bad weather without wrecking it.
If you are going touring around Australia, and in many cases here I'm referring to NSW, QLD, VIC, a bit of SA and southern WA, this book is an invaluable tool to make sure you don't miss out on some of the best riding to be had in OZ.
I've included a link to buy it at Amazon above, it's easy. You can get this book at Angus and Robertson and other Australian bookstores cheaper if you want to do the legwork.
Thank you, Wombattle, that's very kind. It's always good to get feedback, but for some reason praise seems to be best of all... Good blog you've got here, too!
