I took the Harley for 90 or so k's on Sunday and while fuelling up about half way around noticed the smell of burning oil and saw that it was once again coming from the hot bracket. I crossed my fingers and assumed that it may have been residue from the gasket replacement and when I arrived home that was sort of confirmed as there wasn't much to speak of. The background to this can be seen in this blog entry.
Two days on, with only two more days to leave for Mt Isa, I noticed that a 3 inch puddle of oil had appeared under the Harley, this was new. I drove to the dealership, opting not to leave a message on their phone's voicemail and spoke with the person behind the Service counter. I actually got the feeling he wasn't surprised about my news, but clearly I can't prove that. He said a gasket replacement didn't in fact occur last time, they just "tightened things up" took it for a short ride and it seemed fine. He went on to suggest that replacing the gaskets would be fairly involved and may not be possible before I was to leave on the long ride. I didn't actually want to hear that, commenting that they'd had three weeks to sort the leak out and a deadline, so I dropped home, grabbed my helmet and took the Road King back.
He confirmed that they had the gaskets/parts in stock and when completing the form I suggested that rather than committing to particular thing i.e. gasket replacement, the work order should actually say "fix the oil leak", just in case it turns out to be not the gasket!
As of writing this I don't know where they are up to but I am hopeful they will not dick around and have a committed go at resolving the issue. This is now the third time they've had an opportunity.
