First Service: Second Day

Date:
By Wom Battle

I was told yesterday to expect a call about 10am to tell me my bike was ready to be picked up from it's first service.  The call came about 2pm, so I made my way to the local dealership to pick it up. I was unsure what the cost would be, the fitting of the Vance and Hines pipes was paid for as part of the purchase of the bike, I had some extras that were fitted and when I bought the bike I got a voucher setting out that the first service was fixed price.  The price though was stangely recorded at $390 - $450.00, so I guess it was a fixed price range.

When I arrived I chatted to the service guy about the speedo and was told that it was tested at a range of speeds and read within 1 or 2 kph.  At that point I learnt that there was a difference between a speedo and an odometer and I suggested that the issue I had was with how many k's the "odometer" was racking up, not with the speed the speedometer was reading.  My feeling from the recent trip up the Putty was that it was reporting nearly 10% more k's than the bike was actually travelling.

I tried to get some information about how it worked, no luck there, and asked that they contact HD to see if there could be anything done.  The expected answer came back, "The way it works it' can't be wrong", and they left it to me to prove it might be.  Fuck them, I'm going to have a crack at it.

Happily though, the service and bit fitting came in at under the fixed price range at a touch over $380.00. I've got no idea if that's good value or not, I don't really know what they did,  but it doesn't break the bank.

I walked out with a bag of chrome that they couldn't fit.

Epilogue:
In the chat about the odometer I left without noticing that the chrome passenger footboard brackets had not been fitted.  I returned the next day for an hour and they fitted them no charge after they found them in a box behind the service counter.
